Barranco

At the beginning of the 20th century, Barranco was Lima's beach and the pleasure and entertainment district for the wealthier people of Lima. Later it became home to famous Peruvian writers and artists which gave the district a unique character. The best place to start your tour through Barranco is at the Parque Municipal.  There you can appreciate some houses from the colonial and Republican style (called "casonas"), flower-filled parks, and streets.  Nearby is el Puente de los Suspiros ("Bridge of Sighs") which is one of the district's landmarks.  Right below the bridge, there is a walkway to the sea that runs through Barranco, called the Bajada de los Baños.  Go down on this walkway to the overlook to see the water. Just feel the bohemian ambiance and enjoy the architecture.  The district includes numerous restaurants, nightclubs, discos, bars, and “peñas”, where one can appreciate Peruvian music shows.
